Burning Man 2022, exclusive interview with Nana Sao
17th August 2022
"It's significant", modestly affirms Nana Sao, founder of Project Aikido, in this rare interview with The Sybarite, as we discuss the art installation Project Aikido has proudly funded. Project Aikido is a platform dedicated to African art and music development, which resulted from Nana's participation in Burning man 2019 and noting the lack of representation, which has since led to this monumental moment for African artists. "When attending Burning Man, I looked around and saw there weren't a lot of African art installations. Burning man is a project. One of the things of art is self-expression and the principles of engaging with people. Project Aikido is the marrying of promotion with African art."

Featuring The Scarecrows Wedding - A theatrical treat for kids this...
8th August 2018
It’s a love story we know well, having read it again and again before bed, so for Zachary, who is just 3, to see this book brought to life on stage was truly special. Adapted from the bestselling children’s book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler (the writer and illustrator of The Gruffalo), this tale is full of amusing moments and country charm. It tells the heart-warming and playful love story of two scarecrows, Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay who are planning the best wedding ever. As the lights go down, the auditorium fills with cheery folk music and sing-song, performed by the cast on guitar, banjo and accordion, with everyone clapping along in their seats. Straight away my little boy was transfixed and wore a giant smile on his face.

Featuring Death of the logo
19th August 2016
Forget labels. The fashion mantra for autumn/winter 2016 seems to be if you've got it - don't flaunt it. For while designer logos were popular in the eighties, nineties and noughties - when celebs and civilians alike used them as way of showing off their status and wealth - fast forward to today and every self respecting Sybarite knows that true luxury doesn’t need to shout about its status. We’re still purchasing luxury brands - take a bow Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Hermes et al - but whereas once we would have splashed the cash on monogrammed belts and bags, now we’re purchasing clothes and accessories by the aforementioned labels, sans logos. So why are are we all showing off by, erm, not showing off? The answer, I think, is two fold. Our desire for discreet branding is one way to distance ourselves from tacky reality TV stars, with whom we don’t want to be aligned - say hello to Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, both of whom shot to fame (and fortune) on the back of leaked ‘home’ video tapes and thus have the cash, if not the class, to kit themselves out in high end labels. Ditto WAGs and Russian oligarchs…

Featuring Room with a view: Haute art hotels around the world
18th August 2016
Make no mistake: the hotel scene has been on fire for the past few years, partly because these plush properties offer a discerning home from home in the most perfect locations - a mere jaunt from excellent restaurants, world class museums and luxe bars. But also because today, some of the hautest hotels are showcasing some of the most majestic modern pieces of art.

The Queen’s birthday commemorated in gold
8th August 2016
Born on April 21, 1926, to Prince Albert, Duke of York - later King George VI, and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Elisabeth II became the Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth on February 6, 1952, and was crowned on June 2, 1953. To join in the celebrations of this remarkable birthday, many people were looking for commemorative investments for their loved ones. London's coin galleries in Mayfair are busier than ever welcoming clients who are looking for unmissable treasures or bullion gifts for this occasion. In particular The Queen's Beasts 2016 and Her Majesty The Queen’s Fifth Portrait are very sought after. The Queen's Beasts 2016, available in gold or silver, are the most recent releases and celebrate the Queen and Her heraldic beasts. The Beast in fact commemorates the ten heraldic sculptures made for the coronation and placed in Westminster Abbey during the ceremony. The Beast has been designed by Royal Mint Engraver 33 year old Jody Clark.

Featuring Beautiful Contradictions: Luxury for the Culture Aficionado
25th August 2015
Sipping a cocktail on one of the many rooftop bars in the ancient district of Beyoğlu, Istanbul, it is safe to say your impression is both one of contradictions, and one-of-a-kind synthesis. As our conception of luxury moves further away from objects towards experiences, how we synthesise these unique contradictions in culture – scale and intimacy, spectacle and conversation – become unforgettable moments. Our desire for unique experiences is stronger than ever. Equal parts invigorating and dizzying, Istanbul has an abundance of them. Rest assured, your head will be spinning with (Turkish) delight once back on the plane, but undoubtedly, it’s worth every moment. For the one in the know, the historic capital offers a contemporary haven for the culture-seeking, discerning individual. Why not check into the newly designed Soho House Istanbul: a 19th-century Genoese palazzo complete with frescoed walls and Corinthian columns. With 87 rooms and two rooftop pools overlooking the Bosphorus, an aromatic Turkish coffee from its award-winning Cecconi’s restaurant will certainly rejuvenate you for the day ahead, if it’s Turkish-tiled rainforest showers haven’t already.

Featuring Chateau de Vallery, a destination without boundaries
23rd August 2015
Look no further, as The Sybarite thinks it’s found the ideal gem of a Chateau, where freedom and space is everything. You will often find, that on your search for the ideal Chateau, most will have time restrictions in how long you can dance and drink the night away, if not the capacity to accommodate guests overnight. It seems that there is always that “win or lose” situation when venue hunting for your wedding celebration – either you host your guests for a reception at a fancy restaurant by which it then becomes the dance floor for evening festivities only to manage to say farewell (if one is sober enough by then) to everyone and realize that it went by all too quickly, there was not substantial time to ask how everyone was. Most celebrations might happen that way and most couples might prefer it that way too, but if you’re one of those couples who have big families and intend to invite many guests (especially guests flying in from abroad) but prefer to have time for intimate gatherings and conversations, than why not consider renting out an entire Chateau that is exclusive to you and your guests only, for 1 or 2 nights?
