Amazing Graceland — Building The 'Priscilla' Movie
25th July 2025
Women living in invisible cages is a hallmark theme of Sofia Coppola’s work. From the doomed Lisbon sisters in The Virgin Suicides to the isolated queen in Marie Antoinette, Coppola has historically fixated on girls and women at odds with their surroundings. Her 2023 film Priscilla was no exception. Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, Elvis and Me, the storyline of Priscilla spans 1959 to 1979, tracking her initial meeting of Elvis through to their split. In between, it focuses on Priscilla’s time spent at Graceland and its impact on her. The film’s production designer Tamara Deverell, tells The Sybarite it’s about a “woman who is shadowed by a male presence in her life.” This shadow was cast by Elvis Presley, played by Jacob Elordi. The larger-than-life rock ’n’ roll star was a force of nature. In 1959, he met a then-14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu, played by Cailee Spaeny, while he was serving with the US Army in Germany. The fact he was 10 years her senior didn’t seem to phase him. If anything, Elvis viewed her youth and naivety as the ideal means for moulding his perfect woman. Their relationship was complicated and lasted 13 years. During that time, the couple were married and welcomed a daughter, Lisa Marie. “It’s a true story and it’s ultimately a love story,” Deverell argues, in spite of the aspects of their relationship that still raise eyebrows.

Investing in contemporary art: a gallery owner’s guide
12th July 2017
Investing in artwork is of course not purely financially motivated, but many investors who are attracted to traditional methods of investment are diversifying due to the higher potential returns from investing in contemporary art. Normally the impetus for purchasing artwork is a combination of financial return coupled with a passion and desire for the artwork, visually as well as part of a growing status symbol. Art is increasingly becoming part of a social lifestyle membership which is exaggerated by the increasing importance of social media in people’s daily lives. Deloitte Art & Finance Report in 2016 showed that 72% of collectors were primarily motivated by emotional returns, 61% by social returns (being part of a social scene, network of like-minded people), and 64% by financial considerations (investment returns). The average return has been 10.85% per year 1965 – 2016 (Mei Moses Art Index).

The exhibition at Buckingham Palace is one of three separate displays in celebration of The Queen’s 90th birthday at each of Her Majesty’s official residences during 2016. A total of 150 outfits will be shown across the Palaces, and the content of each exhibition has been selected to have particular association with the location: At the Palace of Holyroodhouse the use of tartan in royal dress is explored, while at Windsor Castle magnificent evening gowns worn on official occasions will be contrasted with Princess Elizabeth’s fancy-dress costumes from wartime family pantomimes held at the Castle. The exhibition at the State Rooms explores ceremonial and military attire, dress for State occasions and overseas tours, outfits for family celebrations, and Her Majesty’s support of British design.

Featuring Last night a DJ saved my life
20th July 2016
Turn your disc-jockey dreams into reality on a DJ Dispensary retreat “You ruin your life by tolerating it. At the end of the day you should be excited to be alive. When you settle for anything less than what you innately desire, you destroy the possibility that lives inside of you, and in that way you cheat both yourself and the world of your potential. The next Michelangelo could be sitting behind a Macbook right now writing an invoice for paperclips, because it pays the bills, or because it is comfortable, or because he can tolerate it. Do not let this happen to you.” So scribbled Bianca Sparacino in her first published work, How To Ruin Your Life Without Realising You Are. Here at Sybarite HQ we know we’re not the next Michelango but as teens we indulged in fantasies about working as a DJ, before stepping on the career treadmill and giving up on our dreams.

Featuring Bespoke home libraries are still a luxury amidst the...
29th July 2015
Anyone can have a few nice bookshelves put into his study, but what makes a library is the content. And while “browsing” is now similarly a word used in the online sense, it is more leisurely when you can actually walk through and touch the content all relating to a specific topic – though you may not exactly know what you’re looking for, it is the act of browsing books through bookshelves that has a certain experience to it. Heywood Hill, a bookseller from Mayfair that goes back to 1931, helps you fill your personal library with purveyed content to match. Whether you need 3,000 volumes on 20th century modernist art and design or a few dozen classics on foreign affairs to deck out that private jet, Heywood Hill will go out and find what you need so that you don’t end up with a Great Gatsby-esque wall of uncut encyclopaedias.

Featuring Open Book – meet the man behind private members’ club The...
1st July 2015
But aside from his successful endeavours and business ventures, who is Ronald Ndoro really? And more importantly, what has the journey been like for a man who continues to wear many hats in an industry known for its numerous pitfalls. Like opening a book, The Sybarite sat down with Ronald Ndoro in one of The Library’s many eclectic rooms for an intimate conversation to explore the many adventurous and artistic voyages that ultimately led him to create a private members’ club. With an insatiable appetite for books, it seemed almost eerily fitting that after his mum’s charity shop in Holloway Street closed down, the plethora of leftover books would come to good use for his project so much so that it became the starting point for the concept of The Library. Covered in floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, patrons can easily reach out and grab a volume from every possible genre and indulge in a bit of reading whilst sipping a beverage from a drinks menu that presents itself as varied as the literary selection.
