Location Vacation — How The White Lotus Is Changing Travel
2nd June 2025
“Luxury is waiting for you at The White Lotus. Your stay is bound to be... transformative.” This is the strapline for the HBO series which has dominated pop-culture for the last four years. It’s devilishly ominous and captures the show’s sharp satire perfectly. Centred on a group of wealthy, elite travellers, they each arrive at a beautiful resort for one blissful week, only to endure their own versions of hell. While the destination changes each season, The White Lotus is always set within a Four Seasons hotel. Season one took place in Hawaii, at Four Seasons Maui at Wailea, while season two was shot at the San Domenico Palace in Sicily’s Taormina. The latest season showcases the beauty of Four Seasons Koh Samui, Thailand. There’s always speculation about the cast for each season, but the location is the true star. Almost a character itself, the setting has a tangible impact on and offscreen. The brand partnership between the hotel group and the show has proven transformative, reviving the relationship between entertainment and travel. This has paved the way for an exponential rise of set- jetting. Defined as the act of visiting destinations featured in movies and TV shows, the phenomenon goes hand-in-hand with immersive experiences. These days, it isn’t enough to merely watch your favourite shows – people want to live in them. Why be a passive observer when you can eat the same meals, sleep in the same beds and jump in the same pools as the characters?

Summer in Switzerland with The Dolder Grand
28th June 2023
In summer, beach escapes are tempting, but paradise takes a myriad of forms. Lakes and rivers offer cool, clear water, especially in Switzerland – and the summertime charms of Lake Zurich and the Limmat River are undeniable. If you are a guest of Zurich’s Dolder Grand, Amar Harfy, one of the concierges, may advise you to try the city’s lake and river baths for a refreshingly authentic Zurich experience. After all, this is a city where commuters can be seen swimming to work in the warmer months. But, if you don’t fancy venturing too far from the Dolder Grand – which is entirely understandable – Amar may direct you to Dolder Bad, a pristine pool a short stroll away, or the hotel’s own spa. It boasts a large swimming pool, a Japanese-style Sunaburo and a philosophy that’s all about achieving life balance. A Dolder Grand summer experience is not just about finding beach alternatives, however. Art and culinary delights are plentiful. In 2008, the hotel opened two new wings designed by Foster + Partners, which created a tradition-meets-modernity feel.

Featuring The Brando: a world apart
24th June 2022
Unbelievably less half the price of one South London garage which recently sold for £550,000. But economics aside, this was an investment that would give Brando peace and fulfillment in his later years and is now seen as the ultimate holiday destination for the world’s rich and famous. Tetiaroa is a stunning atoll (for those not au fait with tropical island terminology, an atoll is a ring shaped coral reef or series of islands) located 30 miles north of Tahiti in the South Pacific. Tetiaroa has always been seen as a mystical place, with stars guiding people there from Southeast Asia 4,000 years ago. It was also a favored retreat for the Tahitian royalty who would take part in archery tournaments as their wives were fanned under nearby coconut trees. And then came Brando. Having first visited Tetiaroa while filming Mutiny on the Bounty, the actor fell hard for its natural beauty, tranquility, cultural richness as well as for his Tahitian leading lady Tarita, with whom he later had children. It became his personal sanctuary and then his home when he bought Onetahi, one of the 12 smaller islands that make up Tetiaroa, and named it Brando.

17th June 2022
This year-long, focused exhibition showcases these much-loved works by one of the most celebrated artists working today. Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirror Rooms is a rare chance to experience two major installations alongside fascinating early documentation of Kusama’s experimental performances and events, as well as a brand-new sculptural work that continues the theme of endless replication. In this immersive work, mirrored walls and a shallow pool of water endlessly multiply a constellation of tiny, suspended lights tocreate a feeling of infinite space. Review of Reinventing Kaunas - European Capital of Culture 2022
9th June 2022
This year the honour goes to Kaunas in Lithuania. It used to be the capital of the country from 1843 to 1915 and is often seen as a rival to the current capital, Vilnius. The city has a rich architectural history embracing modernism, and gothic designs and has a medieval fortress. With such a cultural tapestry, it was particularly befitting for the city to be bestowed with such an accolade.

Review of James Barnor: Accra/ London, a retrospective at...
7th June 2021
The exhibition, named Accra/ London, a retrospective, shows the ease and warmth of Barnor’s photography in drawing together the era of Ghana’s pre to post colonial independence, and the Black British culture that was booming in swinging London in the 60s. His work, perhaps not as well known in his active years, shows the images he captured in both Accra and London from the 1950s to 1980s. The retrospective begins in Accra in the 1950s, where Barnor set up the Ever Young Studio, a photography studio known for its impeccable retouching skills. Barnor referred to Ever Young as a sort of ‘community center’, drawing in people from all walks of life. And from the get-go it is clear Barnor is a master at capturing the joy in near independence Ghana, and the ease of the highlife era in Ghana. If you have ever visited Ghana or spent a significant amount of time there, you will know Ghanaians to be abundantly friendly and incredibly welcoming people, and this sentiment is felt through all of Barnor’s photography.

Featuring The Brexit debate: What impact would leaving the EU have...
23rd June 2016
Why Brexit is bad for business Jonathan Worsley, Chairman of Bench Events and ISHC member Why make access to 500 million people difficult? “The UK was a basket case before joining the EU in ’73 and since then has had the fastest growth rate of all European countries including Germany. Why economically would you leave this success story and the access to a market of 500 million people and also the 58 countries that the EU has negotiated lower or tariff free access? We should pay attention to what the institutions are saying The US Federal Reserve, The Bank of England, IMF, OECD, WTO, The Economist, LSE, the Institute of Fiscal Studies amongst many others have all said that the UK economy would suffer if it left the EU. The OECD has said that GDP could be 5% lower by 2030 following Brexit. These independent institutions are warning us of economic decline following a leave vote.
