A Quick Guide to Investing in and Collecting Fine Art
11th April 2025
Investing in art is expensive, but it has also outperformed the S&P 500 YoY for over 20 years (according to the Citi Global Art Market chart). Art is considered a ‘passion’ or ‘alternative’ investment, along with collectible cars, watches, and fine wine [among others]. Passion investments are dubbed as such because they require the investor to have a sufficient level of passion and knowledge about the investment. The Knight Frank 2023 Wealth Report reported that “from an investment point of view, art currently leads all other sectors in passion-related luxury investment performance across the world – in fact, at 29%, it performs almost twice the average for this class of investment”. Though a lot of this performance can be attributed to the astronomical prices paid by investors for the art. To quantify the scale; sales of the collections of Microsoft founder Paul Allen and American investor Anne Bass produced in excess of US$2.5 billion.

Featuring An auction of a lifetime, the most expensive whisky in...
28th April 2022
Make yours a large one. In fact, the largest. The world’s biggest bottle of Scotch whisky is up for auction at Lyon & Turnbull’s Edinburgh HQ an saleroom on May 25th at noon. A range of charities will benefit from the sale of the 5’ 11” tall bottle containing 311 litres of The Macallan Intrepid 32-year-old single malt whisky. The bottle could break the world record for the most expensive bottle of whisky ever sold which is $1.9m. For any amount the sale achieves above £1.3m, 25 per cent will be donated to the Marie Curie charity. The Intrepid was officially certified by the Guinness World Records when it was bottled last year. The single bottle, contains the equivalent of 444 standard bottles. Daniel Monk and the team behind The Intrepid, a partnership between Fah Mai and Rosewin Holdings, were inspired by a passion for adventure, exploration and a desire to help raise money for charity.

Featuring Ariel by David Wightman at Grove square galleries
21st April 2022
On behalf of Grove Square Galleries, The Sybarite are delighted to announce Ariel, a solo exhibition of paintings, prints, and drawings by British contemporary painter David Wightman. Renowned for his striking imaginary landscapes, Wightman integrates collage, colour, and composition to create worlds which blur the lines between fiction and reality. Inspired by the colour theory of Josef Albers and the sublime landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich, these fantasy vistas defy strict categorisation, evoking elements of both the Romantic and the Abstract.

Featuring Pattern Language art gallery by Squeak Carnwath
13th April 2022
Jane Lombard Gallery will be hosting Pattern Language, an exhibition of new paintings by Squeak Carnwath. The artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, Pattern Language presents the viewer with intricate visual archives that entangle public observation and private introspection. The exhibition will be on view from April 29th to June 4th, with an opening reception April 29th from 5 - 7 PM. "Pattern recognition is an essential part of the human experience. We pull from memory to make sense of the world around us. Recognizable patterns allow us to understand common rhythms between people, places, and cultures, understanding the new through the familiar by assigning identity and meaning." As an artist, Carnwath paints her own thoughts and observations, often connected to politics and personal narratives, knowing others will create their own recognitions within her compositions.

Review of Hop to the theatre this Easter and enter the magical...
18th April 2019
We often read about naughty Peter Rabbit before bed, so when I heard that ‘Where is Peter Rabbit?’ was coming to the Theatre Royal Haymarket I rushed to book tickets. A theatre-lover at the age of just 4, my little one was enthralled from the start as the stage came alive with the recognisable characters from the books. From Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle to Mr. Tod, animals are expertly anthropomorphised through puppets by the cast whose control over the puppets, while adding individual quirks, draw out every part of the characters, entertaining adults and children alike. The short stories are presented one-by-one, with the audience able to enjoy the tales of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, Mr.Tod, Jemima Puddle-Duck and of course Peter Rabbit come to life on stage. It brought tears to my eyes as I watched my son totally captivated by the magic that was happening on stage. With Miriam Margolyes narrating the stories of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Griff Rhys-Jones lending his voice to tales of Peter Rabbit and Jeremy Fisher, the musical adventure was provided with a friendly personality and plenty of dimension.

Featuring Lights of Soho presents "Be Illuminated" by Papi
11th April 2017
Roger Taylor, who goes by the name ‘Papi’, is a self-taught artist working with the medium of light. Beginning his creative career as an actor in New York at Lee Strasbourg Theatre Institute, he then became a creative director for some of New York’s hippest night clubs creating sets for their weekly shows. In recent years, Papi moved to Manchester and set up his own design studio where he uses traditional tools and methods to hand sculpt metal and form a fusion light and art. He has also worked collaboratively with some well know street artists resulting in an international exhibition from London to Tokyo. Papi has had numerous sell out shows in London over the last 2 years and the pieces that he creates are either one-offs or limited to 7 pieces only. For six weeks at Lights of Soho, Papi’s creations will depict the vibrancy and the energies of the area, from the streets of Soho to the gallery.

Featuring The definition of a 21st century business Club – 12 Hay Hill
5th April 2016
Between work, meetings, office drinks, visits to the gym and time with friends, we’ve become more reliant than ever on venues that can combine all of these under one roof. One of London’s most exclusive business clubs is 12 Hay Hill in Mayfair. The Sybarite caught up with Chief Executive Simon Robinson to find out more about the club and its offering. Importantly, 12 Hay Hill is not restricted to one service, it functions in many different ways but without sacrificing quality or style. Simon explained “what’s interesting about 12 HayHill is that we are different. There are many, many institutions in London – and in Mayfair particularly – you have hotels, restaurants, bars, and office blocks. What is inspirational about us is that we are a hybrid of them all, and in essence we are a wonderful place to work. That is where it starts from, for me.”
