The Quiet Revolution Of The Polish Culinary Scene

lazienki palace

Poland's culinary scene is experiencing a rising recognition for its unique flavours and growing number of Michelin-recommended restaurants, as Baldwin Ho discovers.

The Polish economy has been flourishing since it joined the European Union in 2004. The country has the highest GDP among Central and Eastern European countries. It is therefore no surprise to discover that the stereotypical, disparaging image of Polish cuisine is very much outdated nowadays. I travelled the length of the country recently to discover what Polish cuisine truly means in 2025.

Meet The Chef: Long Ng Of Taku

29th May 2025

As the artistic soul behind Taku’s refined and revelatory flavours, Chef Long isn’t just slicing sashimi – he’s composing edible poetry. Trained under the legendary Chef Takuya Watanabe for nearly three years, Long has evolved into both protégé and powerhouse, carrying the torch of traditional Japanese cuisine with a modern, almost rebellious finesse.

Top Table: The Ninth

23rd May 2025

The first time I stepped through the doors of The Ninth on Charlotte Street, it felt less like entering a restaurant, and more like being welcomed into the home of an old friend – albeit one with an exceptional palate and a penchant for culinary poetry. Helmed by the inimitable Jun Tanaka, The Ninth had long lingered on my gastronomic wish list. What awaited me; however, was not simply dinner – it was a quietly profound experience.

Kitchen At Holmes: Marylebones Hottest New Restaurant

21st May 2024

Stroll along the bustling Baker Street and you’ll find Kitchen at Holmes. With its white-washed facade and snazzy 'K' logo (with a few Sherlockian caps hanging around for nostalgia's sake), the real charm of this restaurant and bar lies in the genial atmosphere and the straightforward, delicious food.

Chop Chop At The Hippodrome: Londons Best Chinese...

14th May 2024

The Hippodrome, located in London's Leicester Square, may not be the Las Vegas strip, but it's certainly adopting a similar principle of a diverse culinary landscape. The vibrant gaming floor welcomes a mixed crowd, but lurking in the basement is Chop Chop, offering a welcomed alternative to heading outside to Chinatown for a quick bite. Sceptics may question the harmony of a high-end Chinese eatery within the bustling casino scene, but Chop Chop effortlessly defies expectations. Venture down the historic venue's depths, and you'll be greeted by a sophisticated blend of moodily lit tables and neon-gilded booths, setting the stage for an unforgettable dining experience.

A New York Minute For Six By Nico

2nd May 2024

Putting the fun in fine dining, the menu is inspired by a different memory, place or idea, and this time has captured the vibrancy of the city that never sleeps, New York. Simeone has endeavoured to encapsulate the eclectic New York foodie scene in this menu, reimagining famous dishes with signature Six By Nico flair. Casual street food favourites have been refined for the fine dining experience. I stopped by the Canary Wharf restaurant for a culinary trip to the Big Apple.

Though best known for their black daal and spicy lamb chops, Indian favourite Dishoom has a few other dishes up its sleeve that are sure to deliver on both freshness and that little dose of escapism. Featuring Upgrade your summer garden party, as we return to...

12th May 2021

We’re emerging back into social gatherings with joy and optimism this summer. While we’re undeniably excited to revisit old favourites and discover new culinary hideaways, we’re also very aware that not all of us are going to want to head straight back into busy restaurants and bars right away. Al fresco dining, getting back to nature and surrounding ourselves with the company and conversation of friends; there’s no better antidote to the solitude of a year of lockdowns and consequential effects to our mental health. Rushing back into social gatherings may not be easy, but we’re sure that a slow introduction, surrounded by nature is an ideal way to start.   From the 17th of May, although restrictions are due to ease, if we’re looking to socialise indoors, the rule of 6 or 2 households will still apply here in the UK  So, as we enjoy ever so gradually warmer evenings, The Sybarite is breathing new life into the evergreen soiree of the garden party, where you can socialise with the ones you love in comfort, a relaxed setting and in the very style you want to create.

Review of Los Montes de Galicia: A Piece of Galician Food Heaven In...

4th May 2021

Combining outstanding Atlantic Spanish food and nouvelle cuisine flavours, this lovely restaurant located at Barrio de Salamanca, will transport you to the North of Spain without moving from the capital. An exciting gastronomic journey you shouldn't miss if you find yourself wandering through the city. A delight for all senses. The Sybarite recently took off to Madrid (for work, obviously!). We had the pleasure of visiting Los Montes de Galicia, and who knew we’d enjoy this exquisite restaurant as much as we did. As soon as you step into this elegant place, you automatically understand why everybody’s talking about it: the stylish modern decor, the abundance of hanging vegetation and the decorative ornaments manage to create the perfect atmosphere for a great fine-dining experience either with your friends, family or your loved one. Los Montes de Galicia is divided into two different spaces: the restaurant and the cocktail area, all separated from each other but very much connected. Blue vivid tones, wooden decorative elements, modern, bright… pictures don’t do justice to how pretty this place is.

Recipe by Ben Murphy - Smoked Eel, Scallop & Ponzu

26th May 2020

Since he first started at the restaurant three years ago, Murphy has electrified the menu with his signature dishes that are seasonal, playful, and pleasing to the eye. The Launceston Place offering is made up of a la carte menus alongside tasting options with both vegan and vegetarian diets catered for. Some standouts include lobster with celery, yuzu, and coriander; burnt leek with chive and truffle; and passion fruit with Champagne, white chocolate, and meringue. Whilst their doors are still closed, Chef Murphy shares his recipe for a smoked eel, scallop, and ponzu dish with The Sybarite’s readers so that you can elevate your work from home cooking game and bring a touch of luxury to your next meal.

Review of The landmark hotel London review

25th May 2019

What we noticed most at this prestigious establishment was truly in its staff – never failing to greet anyone that entered with warmth, sarcasm and charm. Without being intrusive, its staff remained friendly and accommodating which ultimately made for an unforgettable experience for us. Why should one choose The Landmark when deciding on a five-star hotel to stay at in London? The staff for one thing, but the décor and its signature Winter Garden are aspects of the hotel that can make one feel inspired, comfortable and energised. Each morning, one can make their way to the vast atrium and gather that sense of refreshing energy as the sky above declares itself, greeting you with whatever weather London has to offer. There is something about natural sunlight and wide-open spaces surrounded by charming accents that really puts one’s mood at ease. And for this, we regard The Landmark as an architectural sight to behold.

Review of Down London’s rabbit hole – dear Alice review

21st May 2019

Hidden behind a tiny book shop front is the private members club LIBRARY, above brand new speakeasy Dear Alice. The Sybarite visited this Alice in Wonderland themed rabbit hole for an enticing evening of cocktails and snacks; after all, it’s always tea time… Located deep underneath LIBRARY, just off Leicester Square, Dear Alice is deep, dark and mysterious. We are guided down two flights of stairs and cryptically told to ‘push, not pull’ when faced with walls lined with cupboards and wardrobes. Like the entrance to an evil villain’s lair, with just a push we are transported into a different room entirely, somewhere between Narnia and the Mad Hatter’s tea party.

Review of Lightning in a Bottle - El Rayo Tequila Review

3rd May 2019

Tom tells me about how their journey began in Peckham. His brother had brought a bottle of añejo (vintage) tequila with him from his trip to Mexico and it was like nothing they had ever tasted before. “We wanted to get rid of the bad image that most people have of tequila. It’s often associated with cheap liquor and awful hangovers,” he says. Tom and Jack soon quit their jobs and headed for Mexico where they set out to bring back a tequila experience unlike any other.

Featuring Country escapes: Exploring Lord Beaverbrook’s estate

16th May 2018

The private cinema room where Lord Beaverbrook & Winston Churchill watched news from the front line, Churchill’s suite and bathtub where he would dictate to his secretary, or the bedrooms aptly named after their famous guests such as Elizabeth Taylor and Rudyard Kipling, each designed with the hosts personality in mind. Winston Churchill was once quoted saying that of Lord Beaverbrook; "Some people take drugs, I take Max.” Tales of debauchery (some of the rooms include a double shower), respite (the beds alone are a haven of comfort) and political agendas can be felt throughout the chateau-like estate, but only two out of three are to be had by it’s guests today. Hint – it’s not political. Today, Beaverbrook harnesses the energy and charm of its heritage and blends it with beautifully designed spaces and places in which to dine, unwind, rejuvenate and indulge.

Featuring Roman luxury | discover ancient origins within a...

5th May 2018

It was my first time in the city (can you tell?), and beyond my girlish squeals of glee and excitement driving through the beautiful city at night, we stopped just in front of the Colosseum at the Palazzo Manfredi, where later we spent two wonderful evenings. This charming 17th century palace was built metres away from the Colosseum and a training school for gladiators of ancient Rome. The beautiful building of the Palazzo Manfredi began life in the 17th century as the villa of the Evangelisti family, designed by architect Giovanni Battista Mola. It then passed to the Venerabile Confraternita della Ss Trinità dei Pellegrini e dei Convalescenti (Venerable Fraternity of the Holy Trinity of Pilgrims and Convalescents), as commemorated by the two stones on the façade. In 2002, the villa was purchased by Count Goffredo Manfredi, one of Italy’s most famous entrepreneurs and construction magnates, and thanks to him, Palazzo Manfredi, our superb luxury hotel, was born.
