London’s boldest hotel NHOW

Nestled in the heart of East London and designed by renowned architect duo Project Orange, the nhow London is eccentric and unique.

This isn’t the sort of hotel I would normally check into, but its interiors fascinated me and so, I was intrigued about how much luxury this uber-cool hotel could provide. 

Just 10 minutes from Angel and Old Street stations, the nhow is incredibly convenient for anyone exploring this side of the city. The outside is quite unremarkable, but once you walk through the doors you're greeted by a bold and playful British theme which looks like it could have been created by Lewis Carroll and Banksy - think graffiti, a 30ft rocket ship Big Ben and House of Hackney seating that wouldn't look out of place at the Mad Hatter's tea party. If nothing else, it oozes fun and fits with it’s east London location.

The staff were very welcoming and after checking in we were shown straight to our room on the top floor. There are 199 rooms on floors 1-8, with one suite on each of the first seven floors and then a penthouse on the top floor, which is where we were staying. All of the suites are in the angled point of the building, and so have views across City Road and onto Macclesfield Road. The quirky décor, funky furniture and bare concrete ceilings with visible ducting doesn’t leave you at reception - as the doors opened on the 8th floor, we were greeted by a long, dark and moody corridor where all the entrances to the rooms were street doors in a mixture of bold colours. The lighting was definitely something that had been given a lot of thought.

The penthouse has its own guest toilet before you even enter the main room, which we were told is good for when you are entertaining. I was slightly taken aback with the boldness of the room when we first walked in. The green shag pile carpet was something I have never experienced before, however it didn’t look out of place in this ‘too cool for skool’ hotel. The bathroom had a large roll top bath, against a large flower design backdrop and a gold sink. The shower was just what I needed after a day out in town and the king size bed looked rather inviting. All rooms have Dilmah tea with a full-size teapot and a machine for the coffee. Our suite also had a Marshall sound system which we enjoyed listening to while we got ready for dinner. There is very much a royal theme going on and we were delighted with our ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ robes and embroidered royal towels. The staff had also left me a little gift of cookies and a present to take home for my two children. (There had definitely been some Instagram stalking going on!) 

All of the bedrooms in this hotel are funkily decorated. Think bed heads etched with portraits of the Queen, green-tiled rain showers, luxury Dilmah tea and poster prints declaring that “populism is all the rage”. 

Before dinner we enjoyed a couple of cocktails at the bar where we were looked after by a very friendly waiter. Having looked at the restaurant menu, and having already had a little too much to drink, we opted for a couple of starters and side dishes to share, and I am glad we did. The portions were huge, but also delicious. The only downside to the bar area was how quiet it was, so I am hoping as more people find out about this funky East London newbie, that it will become ‘a go to place’ for drinks and dinner post work. 

After returning to our room, we enjoyed a little people watching on the streets below, before collapsing into the soft sheets. This isn’t your typical luxury hotel, but it is definitely up there if you are craving that East London vibe when you are looking for somewhere to stay.
